Windrow compost turner

The windrow compost turner is the core piece of equipment in the ground-based windrow composting process; its operational status directly impacts composting effectiveness and production efficiency. Operating in open-air or semi-open environments under harsh conditions—characterized by highly corrosive materials and heavy dust—the equipment demands rigorous daily maintenance and standardized operating procedures. Integrating mechanical drive, hydraulic, and power systems that function in coordination, the turner requires operators to master correct handling, maintenance, and troubleshooting techniques to ensure long-term, stable operation.

Operating a windrow compost turner differs from driving standard vehicles. Powered by a diesel engine, the machine utilizes a hydraulic system to control all movements, including travel, turning/mixing, and lifting. Operators must undergo specialized training and familiarize themselves with the equipment's structure and working principles before commencing work.

Structural Breakdown and Component Description

From the perspective of operation and maintenance, the windrow compost turner can be categorized into the following modules:

(I) Turning module: Includes the turning drum and turning blades. Blade wear directly affects the turning performance.

(II) Travel/mobility module: Includes the crawler tracks or tire-based running gear, drive wheels, and travel motors.

(III) Power transmission module: Includes the diesel engine, reduction gearbox, and belt/chain drive mechanisms.

(IV) Hydraulic lifting module: Includes the hydraulic oil tank, hydraulic pump, hydraulic lines, and hydraulic cylinders.

(V) Control module: Includes the operator's cab, control levers, and hydraulic valve assembly.

Application Scenarios and Applicable Industries
Windrow compost turners are widely applicable to ground-level windrow fermentation areas at small, medium, and large-scale organic fertilizer plants; outdoor or greenhouse manure treatment zones at large-scale livestock and poultry farms; composting sites at municipal sludge treatment plants; centralized agricultural waste treatment centers; and fermentation sites for edible mushroom substrates.

Common Material Types
Windrow compost turners can process a wide range of organic waste materials, including livestock and poultry manure (chicken, pig, cattle, and sheep manure, etc.), municipal sludge, distillers' grains, medicinal residues, crop stalks, and garden waste.

Working Mechanism and Operational Logic
The working mechanism of the windrow compost turner relies on the synergy between mechanical turning and natural aeration. A diesel engine provides power, driving the rotation of the turning drum while simultaneously powering the hydraulic system via a hydraulic pump. Blades mounted on the turning drum cut into the material pile, turning, breaking up, and casting the material backward. The hydraulic system controls the lifting and lowering of the drum, while the travel mechanism propels the entire machine forward along the windrow.

Maintenance Essentials and Schedule

Maintenance of the windrow compost turner must be strictly carried out according to the "shift-based maintenance, weekly inspection, and quarterly overhaul" schedule:

Shift-based maintenance (after 10 hours of operation): Inspect and tighten all connecting bolts and nuts; check for loose oil drain plugs. Check for missing or damaged pins (such as locking pins or cotter pins) and replace them if necessary. Inspect the turning blades for damage and the mounting bolts for looseness; replace or tighten as needed. Remove any caked material adhering to the equipment.

Weekly maintenance: Check the tension of drive chains and adjust as necessary. Check track tension and adjust the tensioning bolts if the tracks are too loose. Check the lubrication status of all bearings. Check that the hydraulic oil level is normal.

Quarterly maintenance: Change the gear oil in the reduction gearbox. Inspect all bearings; disassemble, clean, and apply fresh grease, replacing any that show severe wear. Check the wear level of the blades and replace them with new ones if necessary.

Maintenance for long-term storage: Apply anti-rust oil to all exposed parts; cover the equipment if it is stored outdoors.

Troubleshooting and Repair Solutions

Equipment fails to move: First, check the power source—inspect the power supply lines and check if the circuit breakers or thermal relays in the control box have tripped. Next, check the drive mechanism—observe the clutch status, inspect the tension of chains and belts, and adjust the tensioning devices. Troubleshoot the travel mechanism—clear away debris (such as material or stones) from around the travel wheels or tracks, and check track tension. Address material resistance—keep the pile height within the rated range and add auxiliary materials to high-moisture loads to reduce water content.

Weak turning/aeration performance: Check power output—for diesel models, check the fuel level and ensure fuel lines are unobstructed; ensure the throttle is set to the rated speed. Check the hydraulic system—verify sufficient hydraulic fluid levels and adjust the relief valve to the rated pressure (typically 16–20 MPa). Service the turning mechanism—clean the cutter head and blades, and replace any worn or detached blades.

Reduced efficiency: Cutter assembly replacement—use high-chrome alloy cutter assemblies and replace the entire unit when worn. Track maintenance—adjust tension to allow for 5–8 cm of sag. Material moisture adjustment—maintain at approximately 55%. Turning depth adjustment—ensure the depth matches the height of the material pile.
