Horizontal Mixer

The horizontal mixer is a core piece of mixing equipment widely used in the production of chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, animal feed, and fertilizers. Given that the equipment continuously processes powders, granules, and viscous materials—and relies on the coordinated operation of multiple systems, including mechanical drives, sealing systems, and electrical controls—maintenance is a critical and routine task. Bearings support the entire load of the machine, and proper lubrication significantly impacts their service life. Mastering correct operation, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting techniques is key to ensuring the long-term, efficient, and stable operation of the horizontal mixer.

Structural Breakdown and Component Description

From the perspective of operation and maintenance, the horizontal mixer can be categorized into the following modules:

(I) Mixing Module: Includes a horizontal main shaft and ribbon-style mixing blades. Wear-resistant alloy is often hard-faced onto the edges of the ribbon blades; wear levels require regular inspection.

(II) Drive Module: Includes the electric motor, pulleys, cycloidal reducer, and bearings. The bearings support the machine's entire load.

(III) Sealing Module: Includes shaft-end gland seals and labyrinth air-purge seals.

(IV) Discharge Module: Includes a large pneumatic discharge door or a butterfly valve.

(V) Electrical Control Module: Includes the control cabinet, contactors, and other electrical components.

Application Scenarios and Applicable Industries

Horizontal mixers are widely used in the mixing workshops of organic and compound fertilizer plants, the ingredient mixing sections of feed processing enterprises, powder mixing processes in the chemical and food industries, and formulation mixing stages in the pharmaceutical industry.

Common Material Types

Horizontal mixers can process a wide range of materials, including various powders, granules, and viscous substances—such as organic and chemical fertilizer powders, feed ingredients, food additives, chemical powders, pharmaceutical raw materials, and construction materials.

Working Mechanism and Operational Logic

The working principle of the horizontal mixer is based on "double-layer ribbon convective circulation combined with three-dimensional compound motion." The outer ribbon pushes material from both ends toward the center, while the inner ribbon conveys it from the center back toward the ends, creating an omnidirectional mixing circulation in both axial and radial directions.

Maintenance Essentials and Schedule

Maintenance of the horizontal mixer must be strictly carried out according to the "daily inspection, weekly maintenance, and monthly repair" schedule:

Daily Maintenance: Thoroughly clear out accumulated material from the machine at the end of each shift to prevent moisture absorption and caking. Check for loose bolts across the unit and monitor the operation of all components to ensure they are functioning normally.

Periodic Lubrication: Regularly replace grease in all bearings; use 2FG-2 composite calcium-base grease. Change the gear oil in the speed reducer after the first 500 hours of operation, and subsequently every six months. Use composite lithium-base grease for the main shaft bearings.

Periodic Inspection and Repair: Inspect mechanical components regularly (1–2 times per month). Checks should cover moving parts—such as worm gears, worms, bearings, and shaft seals—to ensure smooth rotation and assess wear; rectify any defects promptly. Repair or replace vulnerable parts immediately if damaged. Maintain an operational log to record start/stop times and dates of part replacements.

Maintenance During Long-term Shutdown: Completely discharge all material from the machine when it is not in use. Regularly clean the electrical control box and remove dust from electrical components to prevent damage to AC contactor contacts.

Troubleshooting and Repair Solutions

Uneven mixing: Adjust mixing time and speed based on material properties. Regularly inspect the mixing paddles and inner walls for wear, and replace or repair them promptly. Add additives or adjust the mixing process for materials with poor flowability.

Excessive vibration or noise: Regularly check bearing lubrication and replace damaged bearings promptly. Check the balance of the mixing paddles. Ensure the equipment foundation is stable and tighten the anchor bolts. Check the motor condition. Load materials strictly according to equipment capacity to avoid overloading.

Material leakage: Regularly inspect seals and replace aged or damaged parts promptly. Vent the equipment properly or reduce mixing speed. Operate the equipment strictly according to standard procedures.

Motor overheating or shutdown: Check the equipment load and avoid overloading. Ensure the motor cooling system is functioning correctly. Check power supply lines. Service or repair the motor.

Mixing paddle jamming: Clear away material clumps or foreign objects. Check the bearings. Repair or replace deformed parts.
